How the real MTC works
The Multiplication Tables Check is taken by Year 4 pupils in England in June. It is an online check of 25 questions from the 2 to 12 times tables. Each question is shown for six seconds, with a three-second pause before the next one. There is no pass mark; the aim is quick, confident recall.
Tips for practising at home
- Short and often works best: a few minutes a day beats one long session.
- Focus on the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables, which come up most.
- Practise the division facts too: if 7 × 8 = 56, then 56 ÷ 8 = 7.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)?
The MTC is a statutory online check taken by pupils in Year 4 in England. It has 25 multiplication questions from the 2 to 12 times tables, and children get six seconds to answer each one. RoarMath's Jungle Checkpoint mode uses the same format, so the real check holds no surprises.
What age is RoarMath for?
RoarMath is built for children aged 6 and up, with Year 4 MTC preparation as a main focus. There is no upper limit: older learners use the same drills to rebuild quick recall of their times tables and division facts.
How much does RoarMath cost?
RoarMath is free to download on iOS and Android. There are no adverts, no in-app purchases and no third-party trackers.
Does my child need an account?
No. The whole app plays without an account. Signing in is optional and is only used to keep progress in sync across devices.
Does RoarMath cover division as well as times tables?
Yes. Alongside the multiplication trail, Tico the division scout turns each times table back into its matching division facts, and Versus sprints mix multiplication and division.
How does RoarMath find the facts my child struggles with?
Every answer is timed to the tenth of a second. Facts that are slow or wrong are pulled back into the next session automatically, and Tiger's Den spends a full minute on the facts your child keeps missing.
